India to UK Connection Risk Guide: One Ticket vs Self-Transfer
A self-transfer itinerary can look cheaper than a through ticket, but the saving comes with additional connection risk. On India–UK journeys, compare what happens if the first flight is late before deciding which option offers better value.
What a protected connecting booking means
The UK Civil Aviation Authority describes a connecting journey booked together as one booking differently from a journey made from separate flight bookings. On a protected connection, passenger rights for disruption can apply across the booked journey, subject to the applicable law and circumstances.
What changes with self-transfer
The CAA says that when a journey uses separate flight bookings—sometimes called self-transfer—you do not have a statutory right to care, compensation or transport to the final destination simply because a delay on one booking causes you to miss a different booking. Rights attached to each individual flight can still apply, but the end-to-end journey is not protected in the same way.
Baggage and immigration add time
At Heathrow, separate-ticket passengers may need to pass immigration, collect baggage, check in again and clear security. If your onward flight uses another terminal, extra transfer time is also required. A cheap self-transfer with a short gap can therefore be materially riskier than the price difference suggests.
When the cheaper option may not be cheaper
If a missed self-transfer forces you to buy a new onward ticket, pay another baggage charge or stay overnight, the original saving can disappear quickly. The correct comparison is the expected total journey cost and disruption exposure—not only the two headline fares.
Connection-risk checklist
- Are all flights on one booking, or did you buy separate tickets?
- Will checked baggage transfer automatically?
- Do you need to pass border control during the connection?
- Do you need to change terminals or airports?
- What happens to the onward flight if the first flight is delayed?
- Would travel insurance cover a missed self-transfer under your policy terms?
