India to UK Flight Baggage Cost Guide: Compare Allowances Before Booking
On India–UK routes, the cheapest displayed fare can stop being the cheapest once checked baggage, cabin-bag rules and fare-family differences are included. Compare the baggage allowance attached to the exact ticket you are considering before you pay.
Why the airline name is not enough
Baggage allowances can vary by cabin, fare family, operating airline and itinerary. British Airways, for example, publishes different allowances by cabin and notes that partner-airline rules may differ. Air India also publishes route- and fare-dependent allowances for international travel. This means two fares on the same route should not be treated as equivalent until you compare what each one includes.
Use this four-step baggage comparison
Check the number of cabin items, size limits and whether a larger cabin bag may be placed in the hold.
Compare the number of pieces or total weight included with the exact fare.
If you need more than the included allowance, add the pre-purchase cost before comparing fares.
If another airline operates part of the journey, confirm which baggage rules apply and whether bags are checked through.
One bag is not always the same as another
Some airlines price baggage using a piece concept, while other routes or fare families may use a total-weight concept. Air India currently publishes piece-based allowances for Europe on many international fares, while British Airways publishes cabin- and fare-specific baggage rules. The exact allowance shown on your booking should take priority over a general guide.
Separate tickets can create extra baggage risk
If an India–UK journey is built from separate tickets, do not assume your checked bag will be transferred automatically. Heathrow states that self-connecting passengers may need to collect baggage and check in again. That can also mean a second baggage charge if the onward ticket has a different allowance.
Best-value checklist before payment
- Confirm the operating airline, not only the marketing airline shown in the search result.
- Check the exact fare family and included checked baggage.
- Add any extra bag you know you will need.
- Check whether a connection involves another airline or separate ticket.
- Include baggage costs in your total journey comparison, not as an afterthought.
