Amsterdam Schiphol Transfer Guide: Connections, Baggage & Trains
Schiphol is both Amsterdam’s main airport and a major transfer hub. The important distinction is whether Amsterdam is your final destination or simply the point where you connect to another flight.
If you are connecting at Schiphol
Schiphol states that checked baggage is usually sent automatically to the connecting flight. The airport highlights an important exception: when travelling on two separate tickets, baggage is delivered to baggage reclaim and normally has to be collected and checked in again.
If you do not already have the next boarding pass, Schiphol directs passengers to the appropriate transfer desk.
Passport control depends on the journey
Schiphol explains that travel between Schengen countries generally does not involve passport control, while travel to or from a non-Schengen country does. An India-to-Europe connection can therefore involve a border-control step depending on where you enter or leave the Schengen area.
Do not treat airport layout and immigration requirements as interchangeable. The same physical airport can involve different processes for different itineraries.
If Amsterdam is your final destination
Schiphol’s railway station is directly beneath Schiphol Plaza. After baggage reclaim and the arrivals process, signs lead travellers toward the station and platform information. Rail can therefore be a convenient onward option for central Amsterdam and other Dutch destinations.
Check the live train timetable and planned engineering work before relying on a specific connection.
