Heathrow Flight Connection Guide: Separate Tickets, Baggage & Terminal Transfers
A connection at London Heathrow can work very differently depending on whether your flights are on one booking or separate tickets. Before choosing the cheapest itinerary, check baggage, immigration, terminal changes and the protection you have if the first flight is delayed.
One booking versus separate tickets
Heathrow describes a connecting passenger as someone travelling on a single booking with multiple flights. On many through itineraries, checked baggage is transferred to the final destination, although Heathrow advises confirming this with the airline.
If you booked the arriving and departing flights separately, Heathrow says you must go through immigration, collect checked baggage, exit arrivals, check in again and pass through security. That makes a self-connection more time-sensitive than a protected through-ticket connection.
Terminal transfers
Heathrow has four passenger terminals. For a protected connection, follow the purple Flight Connections signs after leaving the aircraft. Heathrow states that passengers changing terminals can use the airport’s free transfer buses as directed by the connection route.
All connecting passengers must pass through security again before the onward flight. International-to-UK domestic connections also involve additional immigration checks.
Baggage can decide whether a cheap connection is worth it
A lower fare on separate tickets can lose its advantage if you need to collect bags, re-check them or pay a second baggage fee. Before booking, ask whether your bag will be tagged to the final destination and whether the onward airline accepts through-checking on your itinerary.
Connection-risk checklist
- Are both flights on the same booking reference?
- Will checked baggage be transferred automatically?
- Will you need to pass UK border control?
- Does the onward flight leave from another terminal?
- What is the onward airline’s check-in or bag-drop deadline?
- If the first flight is late, is the onward flight protected by the same ticket?
