London Airport Transfer Guide: Heathrow vs Gatwick to Central London

A London fare should be compared with the airport journey attached to it. Heathrow and Gatwick both have strong rail links, but they connect to different parts of London and can produce different transfer times and costs depending on your final destination.

Heathrow (LHR)

Official Heathrow guidance lists three direct rail choices to central London: Heathrow Express, the Elizabeth line and the Piccadilly line.

Gatwick (LGW)

Gatwick’s rail station is at South Terminal, with a free terminal shuttle from North Terminal. Gatwick Express, Southern and Thameslink all serve London.

Heathrow to central London

Heathrow says the Heathrow Express is its fastest central-London rail option, reaching Paddington from Terminals 2 & 3 in about 15 minutes. The Elizabeth line serves all Heathrow terminals and connects directly with several central-London stations, including Paddington, Bond Street, Tottenham Court Road, Farringdon and Liverpool Street. Heathrow describes the Piccadilly line as the most budget-friendly rail option and says central-London journeys take under an hour.

The cheapest option depends on where you are actually going. A faster train to Paddington may still require another journey across London, while the Elizabeth or Piccadilly line may take you closer to your final destination without an additional transfer.

Gatwick to central London

London Gatwick states that Gatwick Express runs non-stop to London Victoria twice an hour in around 30 minutes. Southern also serves Victoria and other destinations, while Thameslink serves London Bridge, Blackfriars, City Thameslink, Farringdon and St Pancras International. Contactless and Oyster can be used for travel between Gatwick and London on eligible rail services.

The best rail choice therefore depends on which part of London you need. A fare arriving at Gatwick can be convenient if your destination is close to Victoria, London Bridge or the Thameslink corridor, while Heathrow may be more convenient for west London or destinations well served by the Elizabeth and Piccadilly lines.

Do not compare LHR and LGW fares in isolation

  • Check the exact London airport before you pay.
  • Add airport-to-destination transport to the headline fare.
  • Compare arrival time with the first or last practical public-transport service for your journey.
  • If travelling as a group, compare the per-person cost of a taxi or private transfer with rail.
  • Allow extra time if you must change London airports between separate flights.

Changing between Heathrow and Gatwick

Gatwick currently advises allowing about 1 hour 30 minutes for its suggested rail journey to Heathrow via Farringdon and the Elizabeth line, while direct coach operators also serve the airport pair. That quoted transport time is not a safe minimum flight connection time: baggage collection, immigration, check-in and security can add substantial time, so use the airlines’ requirements for your exact itinerary.
